SPORTS: Peninsula College women’s basketball team wins one of three games in tourney

LAKEWOOD — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team won one of three games at the Pierce College Tournament last weekend.

The Pirates opened the tourney by losing 75-57 to Clackamas of Oregon City, Ore., on Friday, then rebounded by blasting the Olympic Rangers 89-28 on Saturday, and then finished by dropping a 49-45 squeaker to Wenatchee Valley on Sunday.

Peninsula had three players score in double figures against Olympic on the second day, led by Abigail Jones’ game-high 22 points and game-high 13 rebounds.

Jasmine Yarde sank 19 points and had a game-high seven steals and four assists while Taylor Larson added 15 points.

Jones also had a blocked shot while Jonica Durbin was deadly on defense with nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

Olivia Henderson grabbed seven rebounds as the Pirates had 49 boards in the game to Olympic’s 34.

Yarde and Larson scored 12 points each to lead the Pirates in Sunday’s game against the Knights.

Jones and Durbin followed with eight points each.

Wenatchee’s Dani Bray led everybody with 21 points.

Jones also brought down 10 rebounds while Yarde had seven boards.

Durbin had another strong defensive game with three blocked shots.

Karli Brakes had a game-high six steals for the Pirates while Yarde dished out three assists.

In Friday’s opening game, Larson swished in a game-high 24 points while Jones added 13.

Larson also had seven boards and a blocked show while Durbin brought down six rebounds and earned a blocked shot.

Durbin also had four sgteals while Brakes earned five assisgts and three steals.

The Pirates, 3-4 on the year, next will participate in the eight-team Lane Community College eight-team Crossover Tournament in Eugene, Ore., starting Friday.

Peninsula will open against Spokane (3-3 overall) at 5 p.m. Friday.

In addition to host Lane, other teams include Bellevue, Clark, Linn-Benton, South Puget Sound and Yakima Valley.
