VICTORIA — Jeanne Socrates, a retired schoolteacher from England who set out from Inner Harbour last October to sail around the world solo, reached her goal today.

Socrates, 70, pulled into Victoria between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., becoming the oldest woman sailor to make a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe, Canadian Press reported.

Socrates soloed around the world in her 36 foot, 2 inch cruiser Nereida.

The pre-dawn arrival ended several days of anticipation as light winds along the west coast of British Columbia stalled her return, which was expected last Friday.

The grandmother and retired teach made the trip to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, a British program that provides free home nursing for terminally ill cancer patients.
