SEQUIM — “Violet Picking Lavender,” the sand sculpture outside Adagio Bean & Leaf cafe at 981 E. Washington St., was vandalized Sunday night, its creator Kali Bradford said Monday.

“The whole top is gone; the woman's head is gone,” said Bradford, who had poured 200 hours into the sculpture in honor of the forthcoming Sequim Lavender Weekend.

As for rebuilding “Violet,” “I don't have the heart for it,” she said.

The creation, begun June 6 with about 12 yards of sand, was Bradford's volunteer effort on behalf of the lavender-related festivities to run this Friday through Sunday.

But “I don't want to be bitter,” said the artist, who has been sculpting in sand internationally for 35 years.

Adagio Bean & Leaf provided her with coffee and food while she worked.

And though Bradford will leave what's left of the sand sculpture alone, she will hang more of her art inside the cafe. Her oil and watercolor paintings will adorn Adagio's walls throughout the Lavender Weekend's Art Studio Tour.

The coffeeshop is part of the free circuit ( of 32 artists' studios and display spaces Friday through Sunday.

Later this week, Bradford will head for Duvall, where she has another sand sculpture project to work on.

“We all knew it was ephemeral,” she said of the Sequim sculpture. “We were just banking on people's good will.”
