Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce — Weekly luncheon meetings are held Mondays at noon in the second-floor meeting room of the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St.
This Monday’s speaker will be Joe Borden, chairman of the board of the Captain Joseph House Foundation, which is raising funds to convert a former Port Angeles bed-and-breakfast inn into a respite for families of fallen members of the armed services.
Borden will provide a update on the construction progress as well as the condition of Betsy Reed Schultz, the Captain Joseph House founder who suffered a minor stroke Aug. 16.
Captain Joseph House is named after her son, Army Capt. Joseph Schultz, a Green Beret who was killed in action in Afghanistan on May 29, 2011.
Luncheon tickets are $15 and can be purchased from the meeting room cashier.
For those not having lunch, there is a $3 participation fee that includes a beverage.
Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce — Weekly luncheon meetings are held Mondays at noon at the Port Townsend Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St.
This Monday's speaker will be Linda Kaahanui, senior transition specialist with Port Hadlock-based New Season Move Management. She will share tips on making local businesses more friendly and safe for the elderly.
Lunch at $8 will be catered by Subway. The meeting sponsor will be The Alternative Clinic.
Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce — Luncheon meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at noon at SunLand Golf & Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim.
This Tuesday's speakers will be state Reps. Kevin Van De Wege and Steve Tharinger, both Democrats from Sequim, discussing the 2013 legislative session in Olympia.
The meeting sponsor is Olympic Medical Center.

North Hood Canal Chamber of Commerce — Representing the “Emerald Towns” of the Hood Canal, Quilcene and Brinnon, the chamber usually meets monthly on the third Monday but is on summer hiatus. Gatherings will resume next month with a mixer at Cove RV in Brinnon.
Port Angeles Business Association — Breakfast meetings are Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. at Joshua's Restaurant, 113 DelGuzzi Drive, Port Angeles.
Tuesday's scheduled speakers are Port Angeles City Council Position 2 candidates Peter Ripley and Lee Whetham.
There is a $2.16 minimum charge by Joshua's for those who do not order breakfast.
Cleaning service owner certified in mental health
PORT ANGELES — Susan Winters, owner of Loving Care Estate Cleaning Services, has completed a two-day training course and received a certificate in mental health first aid taught by Julie Calabria at Peninsula Behavioral Health.
“I'm committed to deepening my understanding of the challenges my clients may face because increasing my knowledge will enable me to provide the highest-quality individualized services to my clients,” Winters said.
She also has earned certificates of study in basic mental health conditions and challenges affecting the chronically disorganized (CD) client and in CD client administration from the Institute for Challenging Disorganization.
To earn these certificates, Winters was required to attend courses that surveyed topics ranging from understanding mental health conditions to working with multiple sclerosis-afflicted and aging clients.
Before completing this coursework, Winters earned a certificate of study in chronic disorganization.

PORT ANGELES — Chef Dave Long of Oven Spoonful will offer simple ways of preparing fresh, seasonal local foods during a demonstration at the Port Angeles Farmers Market on Wednesday.
The Wednesday market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Gateway center, corner of Front and Lincoln streets.
“Dave is a well-known local chef and instructor who is very adept at using fresh, locally grown produce to make delicious and healthy meals without spending a lot of time in preparation,” said market manager Cynthia Warne.
“Dave will be using fresh summer produce that is currently available at the market, and we encourage anyone looking for ideas on how to use these wonderful seasonal foods in their meals to come down and join us.”

SEATTLE — The Sound Financial Bancorp Inc. board of directors has authorized the repurchase of up to 129,340 shares, or 5 percent of the company's outstanding shares.
The shares may be purchased in the open market or in privately negotiated transactions from time to time over a 12-month period depending on market conditions and other factors.
The company's subsidiary, Sound Community Bank, has branch locations in Port Angeles and Sequim.
President/CEO Laurie Stewart indicated that the board approved the repurchase program in view of the current price level of the company's common stock and the strong capital position of Sound Community Bank.
“We believe that the repurchase of our shares represents an attractive investment opportunity that will benefit the company and our shareholders,” Stewart said.

Peninsula visitor center employs aide
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Visitor Bureau recently welcomed Stefanie Rotmark as its new administrative assistant.
Rotmark has taken over for Gloria Cerney who retired this month.
“Friends and colleagues recently gathered to say their goodbyes and give thanks to Cerney, who has been such an integral part of the OPVB for the last seven years,” according to Executive Director Diane Schostak.
Rotmark is a relative newcomer to the Peninsula and over the past two years has enjoyed exploring the area and experiencing its unique beauty.
Before coming to the visitor bureau, she worked for a year at the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce after receiving a bachelor's degree in humanities from Washington State University in 2012.
Rotmark also is involved with the Sequim Irrigation Festival committee and looks forward to learning more about the entire Peninsula.

SEQUIM — A workshop intended for small-business owners to learn to manage paperwork will be held at the Quality Inn, 134 River Road, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9.
Co-hosted by Brenda Spandrio, also known as The Declutter Lady, and Angelo Spandrio, who runs the Solopreneur Hotline, this workshop is designed to provide information, systems and solutions for paper that can increase productivity, reduce stress and lead to more control over time, space and money, organizers said.
The Spandrios will present what types of documentation are needed for running a successful business, as well as paper organizing basics and how to set up follow-through systems.

Bank gives grants
SEATTLE — Sound Bank's Sound Community Foundation recently approved grants for the Sequim Operetta Booster Club and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula.
Funding amounts were not disclosed.
The Sequim Operetta will receive a new sound system for the Sequim High School auditorium, including speakers and microphones.
The Boys & Girls Clubs will use the grant to update and refurbish kitchens at its Sequim and Port Angeles units.
Promotional marketer attends show
PORT ANGELES — Debbie Mangano of We Promote You recently attended the annual Specialty Advertising Association of California show in Long Beach, Calif., a show specifically for those in the promotional marketing industry.
This annual show focuses on kicking off the end of the year. The third and fourth quarters are heavily focused on branded corporate and employee gifts, customized calendars and products to enhance end-of-year events.
With more than 500 factories represented, the show is always filled with new products and a great way to reinforce distributor/supplier relationships, according to Mangano.
“I attended several educational enrichment sessions during the two-day show. My favorite was a session, 'Influences of Consumer Behavior and the Importance of Creating Value and Differentiation in the Marketplace.'
