PORT ANGELES — The San Francisco poet who goes by the pen name Klipschutz will open Peninsula College’s Foothills Writers Series with a reading from his book, This Drawn & Quartered Moon, on Friday.

Admission is free to the public to the reading at 12:35 p.m. in Maier Performance Hall, on the college’s main campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Klipschutz, aka Kurt Lipschutz, has author three other books of poetry in addition to Moon. Their titles: Twilight of the Male Ego, The Good Neighbor Policy and The Erection of Scaffolding for the Re-Painting of Heaven by the Lowest Bidder.

Also a songwriter, Klipschutz has co-written more than 100 songs, chiefly with Chuck Prophet, including the recent critically acclaimed “Temple Beautiful,” which is described as “a love letter to San Francisco, stained with tears.”

More than 10 years in the making, This Drawn & Quartered Moon takes pre-millennial San Francisco as its epicenter and from there travels out in time and space.

Those who come to Friday’s reading will meet Moon characters including a plagiarist, a Vietnam veteran, a Mafia don and Elvis Presley. Klipschutz’ father, it so happens, was Presley’s doctor.

Others populating Moon poems are a dying Arab king, a drug mule en route to jail and Courtney Love before she became famous.
