LONG BEACH — The Coast Guard has suspended a search for Lindsey Mustread, an 11-year-old Chimacum girl who was swept away in a rip tide off Long Beach on Thursday.

Her brother, Kenneth Mustread, 9, was rescued after treading water for about a half hour in the Pacific Ocean off the southwestern Washington beach, authorities say.

Kenneth Mustread was taken to Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco and had been discharged by Friday morning, Long Beach Police Chief Flint Wright said.

“I understand he's doing quite well,” Wright said, adding that the children's mother, Brandy Boyd and her son remained in Long Beach on Friday.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Third Class Jordan Akiyama said an air-and-water search for the girl was suspended Thursday night after seven hours.

Wright said the children had been wading in the surf when they apparently were caught in a rip tide.

Wright called it “miraculous” that the boy was found alive.

Surf rescue team leader Doug Knutzen said the boy told rescuers he didn't know where his sister was.

Knutzen said only the very top of his face was out of the water when rescuers reached him.
